What Is the Package Modeling Software?
In an effort to reduce overall packaging by a minimum of five percent by the year 2013, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. together with Thumbprint LTD and ECRM created the Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Package Modeling software.
Package Modeling is a research and development tool for the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) and packaging industries. Manufacturers can create a series of packages comparing different packaging materials to determine how the use of preferred materials could help reduce environmental impact and improve their scores in Wal-Mart's Sustainable Packaging Scorecard. Additionally, packaging suppliers and service providers can use the software to demonstrate how their products can help manufacturers improve their scores in the Sustainable Packaging Scorecard.
How Will It Help?
In addition to potentially preventing millions of pounds of trash from reaching landfills, Package Modeling can help the packaging industry save more than 667,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. This is equal to taking 213,000 trucks off the road annually and preventing 323,800 tons of coal and 66.7 million gallons of diesel fuel from being burned. Package Modeling illustrates the overall footprint of packaging materials relative to alternatives.
Wal-Mart CEO & President Lee Scott stated at the conclusion of the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City on September 22nd, 'Packaging is where consumers and suppliers come together and can have a real impact both on business efficiency and environmental stewardship...Even small changes to packaging have a significant ripple effect. Improved packaging means less waste, fewer materials used, and savings on transportation, manufacturing, shipping and storage.'
What Does It Cost?
Annual subscriptions for Package Modeling cost $900 for the first user and $75 for each additional user; annual Site licenses are also available. For details on how to order site licenses and subscriptions for additional users, please contact Support (440.248.3052).
Subscriptions can be renewed on a yearly basis and include all application, material, and formula updates.
